Nicolás Maduro Guerra, son of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, has expressed his unwavering support for Delcy Rodríguez, the interim president of Venezuela. This declaration comes amidst speculation of a potential betrayal by Rodríguez against Maduro, who was detained in a U.S. operation on January 3. Rodríguez, a close ally of Maduro and former vice president since 2018, assumed the interim presidency on January 5 during a parliamentary ceremony.
In a speech to the National Assembly, Maduro Guerra emphasized that his father's capture did not fracture the group's unity or internal loyalty. He stated, "They may have taken Nicolás and Cilia [Maduro's wife], but they haven't captured the spirit of a people determined to be free. Delcy, you have my unconditional support for the challenging task ahead. Count on me, my family, and our strength to guide you through this responsibility."
The detention of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump via social media. The couple was transported to New York, where they face charges related to drug trafficking and other crimes. Maduro Guerra criticized the U.S. action, labeling it a "kidnapping" and warning of its implications for global order, stating, "If we normalize the abduction of a head of state, no country is safe. Today it's Venezuela; tomorrow it could be any nation that resists submission."
Delcy Rodríguez, during her swearing-in, acknowledged the pain inflicted on Venezuelans by the "illegitimate military aggression" and vowed to maintain peace and stability in the nation. She referred to Maduro and his wife as "heroes" and promised to ensure the country's "spiritual, economic, and social tranquility."
